This one is a treat for Michael Malice:
Unfortunately only in German but heres a short explanation:
Switzerland will be Voting on a major agreement with the European Union that would transfer a lot of decisions from the Swiss people to the bureaucracy in Brussels.
There are 2 ways to hold this kind of vote (Referendum): „facultative“ only requires the majority of the votes or „obligatory“, which requires the majority of the votes as well as the majority in the majority of the Kantons (or regions). The latter is usually required to change the constitution.
The parliament (which is dominated by pro EU parties) has decided to only hold a facultative referendum. This can be dominated by the large Kantons while the smaller and more libertarian-conservative Kantons would be overruled.
But here is the point: the past Swiss President (Ueli Maurer) and the past president of the largest party SVP (Toni Brunner) have both advocated for Secession of the small central Kantons from Switzerland, if the EU association is accepted.
So a recent Head of State (he stepped down in 2022 to retire) proposes Secession in Switzerland with an area of about 1.5 mio inhabitants to secede as the 8 Kantons in this region might loose their independence - I am quite sure Mr Malice would love this development.
