Where are the bears? Bells Flats smells like a cannery. The head of Women's Bay and the beginning of Sargent Creek and Russian River are choked with dead salmon several feet deep in varying degrees of decomposition. All of their eyes have been plucked out by the huge flocks of seagulls suddenly here. I wish they would eat more then the soft bits.
There is one male (boar) bear and one sow with one cub in the Flats. All the other bears (and tourists) are north this year in Monashka (which is a similar small village as B.F. north of the town of Kodiak).
Here is pic when we had bears early this summer at the beginning of the salmon run. They are fishing under Barometer Mountain. Barometer is about four miles north of us. It's the mountain your plane will slam into if your pilot doesn't stick the very tight landing into Kodiak.
